Progress turnaround 2

Working on the curves, shapes and lines of the little guy. Trying to make them more clear to read.
Next is the face, tail, and a first smoothing pass I think.

For me this sculpt is actually a try-out for a next sculpting project I have in mind. More about that one soon.

It's the first time working in this polymer clay for me, and after a few days working with it, I'm starting to like it.
Learning a lot how to 'push' the clay around, and which tools I prefer working on it.
Still I haven't experienced the whole process with this material, there's still polishing and baking, and molding to do,so... there could still be a ton of surprises awaiting me.

Progress

Work on the back mostly. Trying out some folds in his skin.
Did some adjustments on the tail too, so now I can take it off and place it back whenever I want to.
The advantage is, I can sculpt it separately, mold it separately, and it doesn't get in the way when doing work on the back.
And I also worked on the hand and nails a bit.

Walk the Dog

Some more dogwalkers.

Tryig to find out how my watercolors interact with each other,
and,
trying to push my gestures. So far it's more copying the refrence, and really not pushing it any further.
Maybe I need to spend less time on the drawing and 'speed up' my sketches?

Give that a try next time.

Walk

Some watercolor/gestures from my sketchbook.
Trying to capture the pose. I really need to loosen up more I think. They still feel really "stiff" and "straight" to me.
So practice, practice, practice...

Sjakie

Made a birthday gift tonight for a good friend of mine. It's a picture of his dog "Sjakie".
We all went on a holiday a few weeks ago, including Sjakie. He's a bit of an oldie, and most of the day really slow in anything he does. (if he does anything besides sleeping)

This changes 180 degrees when you just say the word : "Ball?".
He becomes really energetic and runs really fast in fetching the ball. It's truly amazing to see the change this dog makes, when a ball is presented and thrown. You will have to hide the ball, if you want to stop playing with him, because he won't stop. He just can't get enough of that game.

So here he is: Sjakie.

I also did some small progress on my nightmares image.

I decided I'm going to make a mostly blue monotone watercolor of it, with maybe a hint of orange, still deciding.
Digital I'm not sure which direction I'm ging to take it. Maybe I'll stay in the same colors, so I can compare the two.

Nightmares

If you got an interest in digital art, you probably have encountered the name Bobby Chiu somewhere on the internet.

One initiative I like to watch once and a while are Bobby's chiustreams. Great evening dinner entertainment, I think.
I also enjoyed his last episode, where he had an interview with 'awesome' artist Dice Tsutsumi.

And there's more...

There's another initiative in Bobby Chiu-land, that is called sketchoholic. The site is currently Beta, and there yo can also watch his interviews, upload a portfolio, participate in contests etc..., anyway, if your interest go and have a look.
The next interview coming up is one with 'awesome' artist/ director Chris Sanders. Every interview has a contest to, Sander's topic for his is "Nightmares"

So I decided to give it a go.

Goal is to make a digital and a analogue painting from it.
Here's my progress from tonight...

Story:
My story is about a boy who has had or is having nightmares, woke up or is not sure if he should go back to sleep again.

Sketch

Value study.
Because I like to make a watercolor painting version of it to, I decided to do a value study, to work out my lighting. And have a better reference for my watercolor, where to stay light and where to go dark.

Then I had seconds thoughts on the sketch, and painted in a hand, to intensify the story? I think now he's more in dount if he should turn off the light, and go to sleep...
Story improvement in value...?

I like to produce a clean watercolor version of this idea too, therefor I need to really work out my sketch to every detail being right, so I can trace it and put it on thick paper.
Digitally it's so easy to make changes, that I tend to try out stuff endlessly.
Doing a watercolor makes me think more and harder about my sketch telling the right story.

Sketchbook page 07

To be honest I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing here. I guess I'm trying out another medium, stepping out of my comfort zone, getting to know my brushes, think about color in different way, practicing my patience, getting frustrated...

...and some thoughts for my next painting experiment.

Sketchbook page 04

Trying to loosen up with my brush ink pen. Looking to push my shapes, trying it out on some villains, based on reference photos from regular people. I think my villains could be more villainy by using more triangular 'sharp' shapes in these drawings. Something to think about and apply with the next try.
